How to catalog your vinyl collection (and why spreadsheets fail)
Why collectors outgrow spreadsheets, and what to look for in a catalog app.
Most collectors start with a Google Sheet: artist, year, maybe a Discogs link. Around 200 records the sheet turns into archaeology.
What spreadsheets miss
- Visual identity: Your collection is art on a wall, not rows.
- Per-copy stories: Shop, pressing notes, provenance.
- Listening memory: Last spin, how it sounded on your setup.
- Social discovery: Who shares your taste, what you are missing.
What works instead
Import from Discogs to seed the library. Then add display cases, shelves, journal entries, and a public gallery when you want to show how you collect.
